History
By the grace and providence of Almighty God, CSI Ascension Church Edmonton began as a humble fellowship of a few families on 15 October 2016, rooted in the spiritual heritage of the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese. What started as a small gathering in faith has grown into a worshipping community sustained by prayer, unity, and God’s unfailing guidance.
The first Holy Communion was prayerfully celebrated and blessed by Rev. George Jacob (Siby Achan) at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. From that blessed beginning, the congregation continued steadfastly in worship, holding regular Saturday morning services and celebrating Holy Communion every fourth Saturday with the Vicar from CSI Church Toronto.
In God’s perfect timing, Bishop Rev. Oommen George visited the congregation, met with the Anglican Bishop, and graciously facilitated arrangements for regular worship. In the years that followed, the Lord enabled the congregation to witness sacred milestones, including the Confirmation of our children by our Moderator, Most Rev. Thomas K. Oommen, at the Edmonton Anglican Cathedral — a moment of deep spiritual joy and thanksgiving.
Under the episcopal leadership of our present Bishop, Rev. Dr. Sabu Malayil Koshy Cherian, meaningful dialogue was held with Anglican Bishop Stephen London, resulting in the blessing of a permanent place of worship at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church where we worship currently every Sunday at 10am. Discussions have also been initiated toward forming an association between the Madhya Kerala Diocese and the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton, reflecting Christian fellowship and unity in the Body of Christ.
At present, the congregation is being shepherded by Rev. Johncy Varghese, who also serves the CSI congregation in Vancouver. Through worship, sacraments, fellowship, and service, the church continues to grow as a vibrant and participatory community of faith.
With hearts grounded in Scripture and guided by the Holy Spirit, CSI Ascension Church Edmonton warmly invites all to come and experience Christ-centered worship, meaningful fellowship, and opportunities to serve faithfully. As it is written, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1). To God alone be the glory.
